Manipal: Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) started an initiative called the ‘MIT Road Safety Week’, as part of which, it is mandatory for all two-wheeler riders entering the MIT campus to wear a helmet.
It is applicable also to the teaching and non-teaching staff of MIT. Entry of vehicles of those who don’t comply is barred.
“A rule has strictly been implemented that from January no student will be allowed to own a two-wheeler or drive a two-wheeler in the campus and even if the student does, he/she has strictly been advised to wear a helmet for their own safety,” said Radhakrishna Aithal, joint director, MIT.
Free helmets have been distributed to the entire MIT non-teaching staff as part of this initiative, hoping to create awareness.
This initiative took off in December last year, taking into account the steady number of road accidents recorded in and around Manipal. Manipal University (MU) has forwarded this new rule to all the associate institutions.
